Educational NASA Computational and Scientific Studies (enCOMPASS)
Principal Investigator (PI)
- Nargess Memarsadeghi/Code 587
- Nargess.Memarsadeghi@nasa.gov
Description and Objectives
- Bridge the gap between computational objectives and challenges of NASA scientific research and missions and academia latest advances in Computational Sciences, while addressing NASA's Strategic Goals 5* and 6** in STEM Education
- enCOMPASS achieves this goal via bidirectional collaboration and communication between NASA and academia.
- * Strategic Goal 5: Enable program and institutional capabilities to conduct NASA's aeronautics and space activities.
- ** Strategic Goal 6: Share NASA with the public, educators, and students to provide opportunities to participate in our Mission, foster innovation, and contribute to a strong national economy.
Technical Approach
- The project includes computational case studies based on NASA applications in Earth Sciences, Planetary Sciences, Astrophysics, and Heliophysics designed for research and development of university students in computational fields.
- NASA scientists and engineers can learn about various computational solutions for computational challenges of their missions and scientific research from academia.
Main Innovation(s)
- 2 case studies were used in a Signal Processing class in Spring 2011 at VSU.
- 1 case study was taught at City Tech, CUNY, Spring 2012.
- PI became coeditor's of the "Your Homework Assignment" column of IEEE's Computing in Science and Engineering magazine, where enCOMPASS case studies will be published.
Infusion Potential
- Every NASA mission and project in need of computational solutions
- Every university class in computational fields
